Demise of Dr. Raja de Silva, Former Commissioner of Archaeology

Demise of Dr. Raja de Silva, Former Commissioner of Archaeology (1967–1979)


Dr. Raja de Silva, former Commissioner of Archaeology of the Department of Archaeology of Sri Lanka, passed away in today (23). His remains will lie in state for public respects on tomorrow (24) from 8.00 a.m. to 12.00 noon at the A. F. Raymond Hall. The cremation will take place at 1.00 p.m. at the Borella Cemetery. 
Dr. Raja de Silva, who commenced his service with the Department of Archaeology of Sri Lanka in 1949, rendered distinguished and invaluable contributions to the preservation and advancement of the archaeological heritage during his tenure as Commissioner of Archaeology from 1967 to 1979. Dr. Raja de Silva's service is notable for his collaboration with the Italian Luciano Maranzi as a chemist for the restoration of the Sigiriya paintings in 1967.
An alumnus of Royal College, Colombo, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Ceylon and the University of London. He later obtained his Doctor of Philosophy (D.Phil) from the University of Oxford.
The Department of Archaeology of Sri Lanka extends its deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, and all those who mourn his loss.
