The Department of Archaeology Sri Lanka, through its Epigraphy and Numismatics Division, successfully conducted a one-day practical training workshop on inscriptions on 27 February 2026 for 32 undergraduate students from the University of Kelaniya.
The programme was attended by 22 first-year students from the Department of History, accompanied by Senior Lecturer Dr Wasantha Disanayake, and 10 first-year students from the Department of Archaeology, accompanied by Senior Lecturer Dr Nilanthi Bandara.
The workshop provided comprehensive practical training on the methodologies of copying inscriptions, formal registration procedures, proper packing and preservation of inscription copies, key considerations in epigraphic research, data collection standards, and the integration of inscriptional evidence into academic research.
The training session was conducted under the supervision of the Director General of Archaeology, Mr. Senarath Wickramasinghe. The practical training session was conducted under the leadership of Assistant Director (Epigraphy) Mr. Buddhi Nagodawithana and Assistant Director (Numismatics) Dr Dammi Bandara of the Department of Archaeology Sri Lanka. Practical sessions on inscription copying were facilitated by Inscription Assistant Mr. K.P. Janaka, Mr. I.P. Nishantha, Mr. Janaka Niyerepola, Mr. Samaraweera, Mr. Susantha, and other officers attached to the Division.
