Mosaic art at the entrance gateway
Vijayananda Vihāra
In front of the staircase connecting the first and second maluva, a mosaic artwork can
also be seen. It is semi-circular in shape and is decorated with geometric and floral
designs created using mosaic art. The tops of the balustrades are also adorned with
mosaic art, although many of the porcelain fragments have now been damaged or
destroyed.
The second maluva, or the maluva where the stūpa is situated, is entirely decorated
with mosaic art. This maluva is octagonal in shape and adorned with floral motifs.
Notably, decorative patterns such as floral designs, similar to mala saha kekula
(flower and flower bud) and liyaväla, can be observed (Photograph No.061). At the
entrance to the second maluva, decorative designs and the date “30. 1896” are visible
(Photograph No.07). However, the month is not discernible due to damage caused by
the functioning of the gate. The marks from the operation of the gate are clearly
visible on the floor.
