                       observed the Five Precepts and became a lay Buddhist devotee in 1880 at this vihāra

                       (Abeywardana, 2001: 30). The first Dhamma School and Pirivena in Sri Lanka were
                       established at this vihāra on 1895.08.05 (Ranchagoda, 2015: 59).


                       At  the  Vijayananda  Vihāra,  the  stūpa  compound,  spire  (kotkärälla),  and  entrance

                       gateway are adorned with mosaic art. Furthermore, mosaic decorations can be seen at

                       the entrance of the stūpa, including in front of the staircase and on the balustrades
                       (Photograph No.02 & 03). There are two compounds associated with the stūpa. The

                       entrance gateway is  located at  the entrance of the first  maluva  (elevated terrace or
                       platform). The stūpa is situated on the second maluva.

                       The entrance gateway of the Vijayananda Vihāra emphasizes the colonial influences

                       on Sri Lanka’s architectural monuments. This entrance gateway (Photograph No.04 &
                       05), is decorated with carvings, sculpture, and mosaic art. Mosaic art is prominently
