Museum Narratives
Collective Memory Theory (Maurice Halbwachs, 1992)
Memory is socially constructed → Museums build collective memory
Collective Imagination (Yuval Noah Harari, 2014)
Humans create shared realities through storytelling → Museums create shared
narratives shaping identity
Transitional Justice Framework
Truth, Justice, Reparation, Non-recurrence → Museums contribute to each
pillar through narratives, education, and remembrance
Sustainable Development Goal #16
Museums help strengthen peace, justice, and institutions in post-conflict
societies
2. Methodology
This study employs a desk review and comparative case study approach to examine
how museum narratives shape collective memory of violence and contribute to
transitional justice in post-conflict societies.
Data Collection: Primary data includes visitor reviews and ratings from Google Maps
on United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) and the Puthukuduyirippu
Victory Memorial and War Museum (PVMWM), while secondary data consists of
museum exhibits, curatorial documents, and official publications. Both types of data
offer insights into the construction of violence-related narratives and public
engagement.
