Lankan historical records and the contemporary historical Sri Lankan Sinhalese
novels. The selected Sri Lankan historical books were Sinhalese poetry collection of
Ehelepola Hataneh hewath Daru keteweema which was written by H.G Andhris De
Silva, The Life of Ehelepola by T.B Pohath Kehelpannala, Trisinhala, the last phase
which was written by P.E Peiris and Ehelepola Devenirajjuruwo which is written by
Anura Manathunga. Moreover, the selected contemporary historical Sri Lankan
Sinhalese novels were Kumārihāmi I (2011) and Kumārihāmi II (2012) which were
written by Priyanka Amarathunga.
1.4 Research Question
‘How does one of the marginalized historical female icons in Sri Lankan history,
‘Ehelepola Kumārihāmi’ portray in both Sri Lankan historical records and
contemporary historical Sri Lankan Sinhalese novels?’
2. Methodology
2.1 Scope of the Study
Primarily, the present research explores the life story of ‘Ehelepola Kumārihāmi’ and
the tragic massacre of ‘Ehelepola Kumārihāmi ’ through referring The Life of
Ehelepola by T.B Pohath Kehelpannala (1896), Trisinhala, the last phase (2002)
which was written by P.E Peiris, Ehelepola Devenirajjuruwo (2005) which is written
by Anura Manathunga and Sinhalese poetry collection of Ehelepola Hataneh hewath
Daru keteweema (1901) which was written by H.G Andhris De Silva, Along with the
aforementioned discussion, the contemporary historical Sri Lankan Sinhalese novels
have been referred. Specifically, the series of novels entitled, Kumārihāmi I (2011)
and Kumārihāmi II (2012) which were written by Priyanka Amarathunga.
2.2 Research design
The present study uses a qualitative research design where the tragic massacre of
Ehelepola Kumārihāmi which has been depicted in above mentioned historical books
have been analyzed using ‘Thematic analysis.’ Contemporary historical Sri Lankan
novelist, Priyanka Amarathunga’s Kumārihāmi I (2011) and Kumārihāmi II (2012)
have also been analyzed using ‘Thematic analysis.’
