the Kiliti Bandara. Similarly, cattle assisting in agriculture were offered blessings to
ensure protection from diseases.
In the villages of Ranamure, Narangamuwa, and Kaikawala, the Aukku Pooja is
commonly referred to as Yakkama, while in Laggala Ranamure, it is known by names
such as Nanumura Mangalya and Yakkariya. Despite these variations in terminology,
the objectives and rituals of all these ceremonies remain consistent, demonstrating the
deep religious ties woven into traditional agricultural practices.
Results
Primary data were gathered through face-to-face discussions with residents of the
study area. A sample of twenty-five families was selected from Ranamure village,
which has around 150 families. The sampling strategy was designed to cover a cross-
section of the population and included households of varying income levels. This
approach was taken because of the observed economic disparity, the transmission of
religious beliefs across generations, and the differences in traditional knowledge
among the villagers.
From the selected families, particular attention was given to individuals from ten
families. In addition, valuable information was obtained through interviews with local
elites and other knowledgeable individuals residing in the area.
Several fundamental objectives guided the preparation of the questionnaires used for
the sample survey. Special focus was placed on factors such as age, land ownership,
education, housing, and land use. Moreover, cultural information, lifestyle patterns,
household appliances, and agricultural practices were explored. Rather than merely
submitting the questionnaire to the head of the household, information was collected
through friendly and informal discussions to ensure richer and more authentic
responses.
Historically, access to Ranamure village was difficult due to poor road conditions,

individuals possessing specialized knowledge and unique skills for various tasks
could be identified. In Ranamure, groups emerged with expertise in recognizing
auspicious signs, assisting childbirth, performing rituals of pacification and blessing,
