ancient craftsmen may have used these clay pipes to keep cool of the water in the
pond.
Furthermore, the spout inlets are really rare in ancient pond technology. Most of
ponds in Sri Lanka such as,
- Twin Pond, Ranmasu garden ponds- we can see normal inlet spouts
- Kumara Pokuna (Prince Pond)- Dragon mouth spout
- Mihinthale Lion Pond- Lion mouth spout ect.
In the Glabedda Queen’s pond the inlets Figure 8; Dragon mouth spout
are lion mouths which similar to the
inlet of the Lion Pond in Mihinthale (fig.9) Some scholars and journalist recognized
this as a dragon mouth. But there are no features similar to dragon mouth and it is
similar to the sculptures of lion that can be seen in royal places in Sri Lanka.
Figure 9; Inlet spouts of Galabadda Queens Pond and Mihinthale Lion Pond
The Lion Pond in Mihinthale was used by
Monks for daily uses. But in here as the
legends, the Queen’s Pond was used by
women. The sculptures of the women in the
pillars confirm this state (fig.10). As well the
Lion was used as a symbol of royalist. So, it is
clear that this pond had been used by Royal
Women.
Although decorated urinals have been found Figure 10; sculpture of a women
elsewhere in Sri Lanka, the level of integration and artistic refinement at Galabedda
Queen’s Pond is exceptional. The sewer system of this highlight ancient technology.
