Lime mortar is used to fill the holes in ponds made of stone and brick. This mortar is
also used to prevent water from leaking into the pond. Also, steps are used to descend
into the pond. In some ponds, the use of water filter (Bisokotuwa) can be seen. And
also they create inlets and outlets for these ponds.
Conclusion
The Galabedda Biso Pokuna ( Queens Pond) stands out as a unique and sophisticated
example of ancient Sri Lankan hydraulic and domestic architecture. While many
historic ponds across the island, such as the
Kuttam Pokuna (Twin Pond) in Anuradhapura
and the Kumara Pokuna (Prince Pond) in
Polonnaruwa, showcase remarkable feats of
water management, Galabedda Biso Pokuna
(Queens Pond) distinguishes itself by
combining water technology with household
infrastructure and sanitation facilities within a Figure 7; Kumara Pokuna (Prince Pond)
single, integrated space.
The similarities to Kumara Pokuna (Prince Pond), especially the integration of
bathing and residential spaces, suggest that Galabedda Biso Pokuna served a high-
status community, likely involving royalist. And in Galabedda biso pond unlike
Kumara pokuna (Prince Pond), the
household factors can be seen around
the pond. With the foundation stones
around this pond, it can be said that, this
is built inside of a house with wooden
pillars. Furthermore, inside of this
household there is a decorated urinal
which figures out the luxury life of
royalist.
As well, the underground clay pipe
system of this pond also prominent
example for ancient hydraulic system. Ancient civilizations highlight the clay pipe
system in their irrigation technology. As a dry region pond because of the climate,
