Ancient Coins (Numismatics)

Our ancestors crafted small coins that not only reflect the excellence of our heritage but also showcase Tovantha designs. These coins are instrumental in deciphering our historical narrative. The earliest evidence of rudimentary transactions in our country is traced back to the Mesolithic society.

The history of coinage in Sri Lanka extends back to the 3rd century BC. The oldest documented evidence of coin circulation within Sri Lanka is derived from cave inscriptions. Titles related to coinage such as "Rupadaka" (Director of Coinage) and "Rupavapara" (Coin Approving Officer), as found in these inscriptions, confirm that coinage operations were systematically organized.

Sri Lanka’s engagement in domestic and international trade significantly contributed to the circulation of coins throughout the country. The ancient coins provide substantial insights into ancient society. Researchers have identified and chronologically classified ancient coins used in Sri Lanka into categories of local and foreign origins.
